Per decenni la durata della batteria degli smartphone è stata uno dei parametri più misteriosi e controversi del settore tecnologico. I produttori hanno sempre fornito stime generiche come “fino a 24 ore di utilizzo” o “fino a 15 ore di riproduzione video“, lasciando i consumatori nel limbo dell’incertezza e costringendoli a fidarsi di recensioni spesso discordanti o di test non standardizzati.
Noi stessi abbiamo cercato in passato di trovare un test che fosse standard, ma era un lavoro enorme da gestire perché la misura di un singolo smartphone richiedeva settimane.
Parte del nostro lavoro non è andato però perduto, perchè le procedure che avevamo messo a punto con l’azienda francese Viser sono le stesse che poi Viser ha fornito all’Europa per il test che viene usato per certificare realmente la durata della batteria di un telefono ai fini di compilare le etichette.
Abbiamo estratto tutti i dati dal database europeo per vedere quali sono gli smartphone che secondo i produttori durano di più, ma prima una piccola premessa sul modo in cui i test vengono fatti.
Come viene misurata la batteria dai produttori secondo le specifiche UE
La procedura per il test di durata della batteria di smartphone e tablet è definita, come abbiamo detto, da specifiche metodologie di misurazione e calcolo, che mirano a garantire affidabilità, accuratezza e riproducibilità dei risultati.
La prima cosa da sapere è che la durata della batteria per ciclo, ai fini della verifica della conformità, sono calcolati con la versione del sistema operativo installata sulle unità alla data della loro immissione sul mercato.
Trattandosi di un test che può dare risultati diversi a seconda delle app installate e della configurazione ci sono una serie di paletti:
- Tutte le applicazioni, ad eccezione di quelle di sistema necessarie, devono essere chiuse.
- Non è richiesto alcun account utente specifico (es. Google o Apple ID).
- Il browser web utilizzato è quello nativo del sistema operativo del dispositivo.
- Le funzioni di risparmio energetico devono essere disattivate.
- Nessun accessorio deve essere collegato al dispositivo.
- Per i dispositivi Dual-SIM, è inserita una sola carta SIM; per i dispositivi Dual-SIM con eSIM, la eSIM è disattivata; per i dispositivi con solo eSIM, si usa la eSIM.
- La luminosità è impostata a 200 cd/m2, verificata con apparecchiatura esterna. La luminosità automatica è disattivata e la frequenza di aggiornamento è al valore predefinito.
- La modalità scura è disattivata.
- Tutti i volumi audio (chiamate e media) sono impostati a 75 dBa a una distanza definita, verificati con apparecchiatura esterna (fonometro a 20 cm dalla parte anteriore dello schermo).
- Durante il video si usa l’altoparlante impostato nella configurazione predefinita.
- Durante la chiamata, lo schermo deve essere spento.
- È possibile usare qualsiasi simulatore di rete in grado di supportare le impostazioni richieste, caricando i contenuti specifici (video, pagine web, file) sul simulatore.
Definiti questi paletti, viene eseguita una sequenza continua che si ripete dal livello di carica della batteria al 100% fino allo spegnimento del dispositivo.
Per gli smartphone la sequenza è questa (e chi si ricorda i nostri test ci vedrà una certa similitudine)

La durata della batteria in ore è pari al tempo di esecuzione della sequenza di prova specificata. Inutile dire che pesa tantissimo l’inattività: è un test molto “leggero”.
La misurazione della durata della batteria in cicli
Oltre alla durata della batteria c’è anche un secondo valore, ovvero la durata della batteria in cicli.
Le batterie degli smartphone vengono testate per vedere quanto a lungo mantengono la loro efficienza. L’obiettivo è che la batteria, una volta completamente carica, mantenga almeno l’80% della sua capacità originale.
Il risultato del test è un numero di cicli di carica/scarica. Questo numero viene sempre arrotondato per difetto alla centinaia più vicina e presentato con un “maggiore o uguale a”, per esempio: “≥ 800”, “≥ 900”, e così via. Questo significa che la batteria ha superato quel numero di cicli mantenendo l’80% della capacità.
È importante sapere che la durata della batteria in cicli viene calcolata usando la versione del sistema operativo che il prodotto aveva al momento del suo lancio sul mercato.
La sequenza di test
- Primo ciclo: La batteria viene scaricata lentamente (a un tasso di 0,2 C) e viene misurata la sua capacità.
- Cicli intermedi: Si eseguono poi 498 cicli (dal 2° al 499°) con una scarica più veloce (a un tasso di 0,5 C).
- Verifica intermedia: Si ripete la prima fase: un altro ciclo di scarica lenta (0,2 C) con misurazione della capacità.
- Cicli successivi (se necessario): Se la batteria supera i 500 cicli mantenendo la capacità, il test continua aggiungendo blocchi di 99 cicli a scarica media (0,5 C).
- Verifica continua: Dopo ogni blocco di 99 cicli (del punto 4), si ripete la fase 1 (scarica lenta e misurazione della capacità).
Questo processo (fasi 4 e 5) viene ripetuto finché la capacità della batteria scende sotto l’80% della sua capacità originale.
